Neighborhood Guides

Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek is one of the largest cities in Contra Costa County and sits 16 miles east of Oakland along Interstate 680 and Highway 24. Its active downtown features hundred-year-old buildings and an extensive shopping district with high-end retail establishments.

Walnut Creek owns more open space per capita than any other community in the state of California and owns part of Lime Ridge Open Space, Shell Ridge Open Space, Acalanes Ridge Open Space, and SugarLoaf Open Space. The primary residential neighborhoods that attract the lion’s share of single family home buyers include Larkey Park, Saranap, Northgate, and Lakewood/South Walnut Creek.

  • Schools and infrastructure

Formerly known as Dewing Park, Saranap is a charming neighborhood that sits east of Lafayette’s Condit neighborhood and just north the community of Rossmoor. While homes in Saranap have an address of Walnut Creek, some streets are part of the city of Lafayette school district and the entire area is part of Acalanes High School District (Acalanes & Las Lomas High School). The quiet tree lined streets and flexibility to both Walnut Creek and Lamorinda schools make Saranap a very desirable neighborhood.

It’s characterized by mostly flat bungalow and a great neighborhood for young families and first time buyers.

As you drive north and east down Ygnacio Valley Road toward Lime Ridge Open Space, lies the bustling neighborhood of Northgate. While furthest away from Walnut Creek’s downtown district, Northgate has everything you need from shopping to parks and recreation to public and private schools and a world class medical center in John Muir Hospital. All the more reason to rarely extend beyond the boundaries of the neighborhood.

Perched atop a ridge just east of Walnut Creek’s downtown district, Lakewood is home to a small residential reservoir that is centrally located within the neighborhood. It is probably the most residential of all of Walnut Creek’s neighborhood and its tree-lined streets are appealing for any home buyer.
